As an Apprentice, you may not have spent a great deal of time in a work environment but your employer and Remit are here to help you understand how you can stay safe at work and settle into your role. Staying safe at work is everyone’s responsibility and an important part of working life and being part of a team.
Here are some of our top tips for getting started in a new role:
1. Make sure you are aware of health and safety processes at work
Your employer will be able to give you a safe working induction and there is also an extensive health and safety at work section as part of your Remit online induction. Health and Safety in the workplace is part of all Remit Apprenticeships. If you are aged 16-18 or if you work in a dangerous environment, you will generally not be left alone at work but if you have any concerns, talk to your Remit Apprenticeship development coach (ADC) or your employer.
2. Make sure you are aware of your responsibilities at work
What jobs does your employer expect you to do on a daily basis, what time should you arrive for work and what is the dress code? Find out what your employer’s policies are on taking breaks and on using your mobile phone at work. Understanding this from the beginning will make it easier to fit in to your new role.
3. Spend time working through the Remit online induction
This has a raft of really useful information that will help you to get started in your chosen role and qualification. Your Remit ADC will show you how to use the online induction and will guide you as to which sections to complete first.
4. Always seek help or clarification if you need it
There are no stupid questions when you first get started in a job! If you finish particular tasks and are not sure what to do next, ask your workplace mentor. The same goes for the work that your Remit ADC asks you to complete – if you are not sure, contact them via phone or email to ask for help rather than wait until they next visit. This will mean you are more likely to achieve you qualification on time.
5. Take time to get to know a bit about your colleagues.
Staff who have been in the industry or the business for a long time will be able to help you out with different questions and show you how things are done. Working in a friendly environment makes work even more enjoyable and productive.
6. Be careful about workplace banter (joking around in the workplace)
Whilst workplace banter happens in virtually all workplaces and is a normal part of working life, its best to steer clear of anything that could be deemed offensive or upsetting to someone and remember, banter should never, ever become physical or have the potential to cause someone harm. Jokes about religion, race, gender, disability and sexuality are best avoided. If you are worried about banter in your workplace then talk to your employer or your Remit ADC.
