What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is work based vocational training funded by the Skills Funding Agency, Skills for Scotland and the Welsh Assembly Government. There is no cost to the young person (aged 16-23) when undertaking an apprenticeship, but the employer may be required to contribute to the cost of training if the young person begins the apprenticeship after their 19th birthday.

Learners will be based in their place of employment where they will be fully employed, training will be through a day or block release programmes with the apprentice attending a college or one of Remits training academies. Some apprenticeships may be delivered solely in the workplace. This will be delivered through assessor teaching and learning and may also include some virtual learning which we now have available for a number of our programmes.

 

Can anyone do an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship training is for 16-24 year olds that have not already completed a qualification in a similar type of work. But it is best to check this as you may be able to complete a level 3 qualification even if you have a level 2 in a similar subject.

In Scotland a priority of funding is set at 16-19 year olds, however on occasion funding could become available for the 20+ age group in some occupational sectors.

What does an apprenticeship involve?

An apprenticeship will involve on the job training with either a day release or block release programme. This will be held at a further education (FE) college or training centre. Some programmes also offer a distance e-learning facility so learner will be able to remain in their place of employment.

When spending time at the further education (FE) college or training centre apprentices will study with young people undertaking a similar programme to them which offers a unique chance to support and motivate other learners.

Apprentices will be paid for their time in both the work place and FE College or training centre, they will be fully employed by the business so will be entitled to the same employee rights and benefits as other people in the business. Once the apprenticeship has been completed the learner will have both a recognised qualification and experience within their chosen field to be able to successfully progress their career.

 

How much does an apprentice get paid?

Apprentices are entitled to the minimum apprenticeship salary of £3.40 an hour. This can vary from employer to employer as they may choose to pay more than this and offer other benefits to the apprentice.

Are travel costs provided by the employer?

This is to be decided between the apprentice and the employer, usually travel costs will not be provided.

 

When do apprenticeships start?

An apprenticeship can be started at any time of year. Once an applicant has registered their details with Remit through the online application form, we can notify them about new vacancies as they become available.

 

How can I find and apply for an apprenticeship?

When will I find out if I have got an apprenticeship?

Once you have had an interview your Remit recruiter be in contact to let you know if you have been successful in securing an apprenticeship placement. The recruiter will then arrange your start date. If you are unsuccessful we will discuss with you any other opportunities that you can interview for.

Typically the decision can take up to a week but depending on the employer this makes take longer. You may also be invited to do a trial or attend a second interview, you will be told the details of this as soon as Remit are made aware.

Can I progress during an apprenticeship?

This is dependent on the employer. There may be opportunities for you to build on your skills and take on more responsibilities throughout your apprenticeship programme.

 

What is the length of an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship programmes typically take a minimum of 12 months to complete but some programmes can take up to 24 months and 36 months depending on the specialism of the apprenticeship.

At this point in time apprenticeships cannot be completed in less than 12 months.

 

What will happen once I have applied or registered for an apprenticeship?

Once you have registered through our website or applied for one of our apprenticeships we will contact you to let you know about vacancies within a commutable distance. If you are interested in any of the apprenticeship vacancies available we will then arrange interviews with the employer for you. At this point you will attend a face to face interview with the employer.

If you are successful at interview Remit will enrol you and start your training straightaway. If you are unsuccessful at the interview, we will continue to look for apprenticeship placements for you until we are able to find something suitable or until you find an alternative.

 

What qualifications will I get once I have completed the apprenticeship?

Depending on your programme you will gain either a Level 2 or 3 NVQ/VCQ in the specialism you have chosen.

Through some programmes you can progress onto a higher level of NVQ/VCQ.

 

Will I be able to stay with the company once I have completed the apprenticeship?

This depends on the employer. If you make a good impression and work hard the employer may decide to employ you after the apprenticeship has been completed.

This cannot be guaranteed, but at the end of the apprenticeship you will have gained a practical qualification and experience to be able to help you find employment within the industry you have chosen. 

 

Can I study full time as well as participate in an apprenticeship?

No, apprenticeships are designed to be an alternative to full time study and you will be required to work full time at your place of employment.

 

How does training and assessment work within the ‘College’ model?

Theory training (Technical Certificate) is delivered by the college and practical assessments (NVQ/VRQ) are covered by Remit Assessors at the apprentice’s place of work. Key/Functional Skills is also completed by the Remit assessor. The alternative to this the block release delivery. This is where rather than going to college one day a week, the apprentice with attend a Remit training academy for a full week every few months. This reduces the time away from the work placement.

 

How does training and assessment work within the ‘In House’ model?

With the ‘In house’ model, Remit Assessors will deliver all the theory, practical and Key/Functional Skills teaching and learning at the apprentice’s place of work.

Am I entitled to holidays during my apprenticeship?

Yes, as you are fully employed by the company you are placed with for your apprenticeship, you will be entitled to all of the same benefits as other employees.

Am I able to choose where I work?

All of our apprenticeships are advertised on behalf of a company, if you apply directly to one of our advertisements and you are successful you will be interviewed by the company who advertised with us. So you can decide whether the company and the working environment are right for you.

What happens if I get made redundant on an apprenticeship?

If you get made redundant from your employer during your apprenticeship please let Remit or your assessor know as soon as you are aware. Remit will be able to give you advice and support during the redundancy as well as endeavouring to find you an alternative placement as soon as possible.

What should I do if I experience any problems during my apprenticeship?

If you experience any problems during your apprenticeship depending on the issue it is best to discuss this with your employer as well as your Remit assessor.

If the issue is about the workplace it is best to first discuss this with your manager to see if the problem can be resolved, but make sure you let your assessor know as if the issue cannot be resolved directly with your manager Remit may be able to help.

If the issue is about the training and assessments you can go directly to your assessor to see if there is any additional support that they can offer you to make sure you are getting the most out of your apprenticeship and can assign you a learning support coach.

What hours will I work?

Apprenticeships are designed to be full time so you will typically be working between 30-40 hours a week. You may have the opportunity to work overtime but this will be dependent on your employer.

A typical working week will be Monday-Friday (9am-5pm) but this may differ due to the requirements of the business you are working in. You may need to work shifts, evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Your working hours and shift patterns will be explained to you either by your Remit recruiter or employer during the recruitment process and during your induction to the company.

What qualifications do I need to get an apprenticeship?

This will depend on the industry and the requirements from each employer. The IT programme requires that the learners have A-C in English and Maths at G.C.S.E level. For any of our other programmes the requirements will depend on the requests of the employer.

We can put young people onto apprenticeship programmes who have low academic qualifications but have a real desire to work and learn. In these situations we will complete Functional Skill/Key Skills/Core Skills alongside the qualification to comply with qualification framework requirements. To determine your suitability for undertaking an apprenticeship we will conduct an assessment test with you at recruitment stage. This test will allow us to understand if you will require any support to enable you to successfully complete an apprenticeship programme.

When can I start applying for an apprenticeship?

You can start applying for an apprenticeship whenever you are ready and have decided this is the right path for you.

However we recommend that you register your details as soon as you start year 11 and have decided that an apprenticeship is the option for you; this will give us the best chance of finding an employer in time for you finishing school.

What if I did my studies abroad?

If you have completed your studies outside of the UK Remit will need to check if you are eligible to undertake an apprenticeship.

If I have a degree am I still able to apply for an apprenticeship?

A degree is a higher qualification than an apprenticeship which means you would not be eligible to for the funding required to train as an apprentice.

What is the role of Remit and other training providers?

A training provider is usually a local college or specialist training organisation responsible for an apprentice’s off-the-job training.

Remit will support both employers and apprentices throughout all aspects of the apprenticeship programme. Such as recruitment, on and off the job training, funding, learning support and assessments

During the apprenticeship Remit, like other providers, will appoint an assessor to help the learner through their apprenticeship training and testing. The assessor will also be on hand to support both the employer and apprentice during the programme. They will be the first point of call for the learner and the company if any issues do arise.

What will an apprenticeship cost to the employer?

To employ an apprentice the employer will need to cover the cost of their wages, the minimum wage for an apprentice is £3.40 an hour. The employer can choose to pay the apprentice more if they wish.

The training itself may be fully funded by the government depending on the age of the apprentice. If the young person is aged between 16-18 years old the training will be fully funded and many over the age of 18 will be partially funded.

What grants are available to employers?

Until December 2014 employers have the chance to claim up to £1,500 for employing their first apprentice, subject to eligibility and availability.

There may also be grants available from your local authority for apprenticeships.

How much support will an apprentice need?

An apprentice will require appropriate levels of support and supervision when undertaking the programme and will need to shadow qualified members of staff to gain on the job training. Here at Remit we suggest that you nominate a workplace supervisor to help with the learner’s development. This should be someone who will be a good role model and assist the learner in gaining the valuable skills they need to progress.

As the apprentice progresses through the training they will be able to start completing tasks on their own with very little supervision. To ensure the apprentice is competent in their role a Remit assessor will visit them at your work place to complete assessments and training.

If the learner requires additional support, they may be appointed a learning support coach who will be able to help the learner throughout their programme with regular one to one coaching and tailored support and guidance.

If I have already employed someone but would like them to become an apprentice am I able to do this?

Yes, if you already have an employee who you would like to enrol onto an apprenticeship this can be done.
