Why choose an Apprenticeship?

August 16, 2016

Excitement (and nerves) are mounting as hundreds of thousands of young people up and down the country prepare for their exam results this month. For those considering their options, there has never been a better time to start an Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships offer real job opportunities, alongside a nationally recognised qualification, providing the chance to earn and learn in some very exciting industries.

The numbers speak for themselves. Apprenticeships are being taken up at a record rate, with more than 872,000 people were earning and learning on an Apprenticeship qualification in the 2014/15 academic year.

Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said:

“Apprenticeships are thriving in England and it’s not hard to see why. They offer ambitious young people unrivalled career prospects and personal development opportunities. Apprentices earn while they learn in a real job, gaining a nationally recognised qualification and a bright future.”

Apprenticeships not only provide a great start in a chosen industry, but they also offer real opportunities thereafter. The majority of Apprentices (90%) will stay in employment with seven in ten (71%) staying with the same employer. A quarter of all former Apprentices (23%) received a promotion within 12 months of finishing, and for intermediate and advanced apprentices, three quarters reported taking on more responsibility in their job after completing their Apprenticeship.

Some 89% of apprentices are satisfied with their Apprenticeship; 85% of Apprentices said their ability to do the job had improved, and 83% of Apprentices said their career prospects had improved. And what’s more, employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications.
