Remit Training supporting apprentices to fill industry skills gap

Remit Training is supporting employers across the UK to train body shop repair technicians to fill the industry skills gap.

Working within the automotive sector for more than 20 years Remit Training operates as the training arm of the Retail Motor Industry Federation and partners with companies of all sizes across the UK to develop the skills needed to build a workforce for the future.

Automotive Development Director for Remit Training, Mick Pilling, said: “The high cost of delivering effective training for body and paint apprentices means the number of facilities in colleges across the country has significantly reduced over the last few years. Subsequently large numbers of apprentices are finding it impossible to get to an adequate training facility on day release programmes.

“This is resulting in a skills gap, which is making it difficult for employers to find and retain skilled and qualified technicians. But there is a lot being done in terms of training and up-skilling in order to make sure the workforce isn’t overtaken by new materials and techniques.”

Remit Training has seen an increasing number of companies using apprenticeships as a way of growing their own skilled workforce and generating revenue.

Mick added: “Apprenticeships are now more widely recognised as a credible route into employment and we have developed a range of apprenticeship delivery models for the body repair industry that not only support the needs of the learner, but also help build a future workforce for employers.”

“It is a partnership though and won’t be effective without a strong working relationship between training provider and employer. We need to listen to the wider industry and individual employers to understand their business needs and establish how apprentices can be part of a solution to the skills shortage.”

With planned changes to the funding of apprenticeships from April 2017, this partnership approach has never been more important.

Mick concludes: “As a training provider we are able to steer our partner clients through planned changes but our message to all body shop owners is to consider their options now and have a plan in place to ensure they maximise this opportunity before new charges come into place.”
