In 2013 Remit launched a new enhanced delivery model for apprenticeship training. This is an innovative training experience for both apprentices and employers within the independent automotive industry. The format is based around block release training, but the apprentice will still receive regular visits to their work place from a Remit assessor. The learner will be able to complete distance learning at their own pace through a virtual learning environment (VLE) and this has been created by Remit to ensure it is bespoke to the automotive industry. The blended approach of supported distance learning coupled with block training at one of Remits motor vehicle training facilities provides an apprenticeship framework that entails far less time away from work than a traditional college based model.
Remit are able to offer this programme throughout England. The following sections will provide further information about the programme and how it can work for any motor vehicle business.
What automotive areas does the programme cover?
We are currently able to offer both the light vehicle technician level two and the level three apprenticeship frameworks through the enhanced delivery model.
How long does the programme last?
Apprentices will normally complete their level two training within 18 months of joining the programme. Level three is a further 12 months.
What are the different elements of the programme and what do they mean to the employer and apprentice?
- Virtual Learning Environment – apprentices will be expected to log in online to complete work and self-study through interactive high quality motor vehicle theoretical learning material.
- Learning Monitoring and Support – access to the learning platform is monitored for each learner and assessor support is provided to ensure learning takes place along with timely progression.
- Learner Visits – The learner will be visited in the work place by the assessor at least every 6 weeks.
- Functional Skills – These are integrated as part of the apprenticeship programme with individual learning needs being addressed as appropriate.
- Block Training – Over the 18 months there are 4 scheduled one week blocks of training on the level 2 programme.
Are the expectations of the employer different to a normal apprenticeship?
Employers will be expected to continue with the same responsibilities as with a standard apprenticeship delivery model. This includes, but is not limited to:
• The employer will need to pay the apprentice as normal for the off the job block training in the same way as an apprentice would be paid by their employer when attending day release
- If the block training is located such that the apprentice requires hotel accommodation the full cost of this is met by Remit along with transport to and from the hotel to the training centre. The employer is required to meet the cost of travel to and from block training at the start and end of each week.
- The apprentice will be required to be available for self study and any scheduled webinars either at home or work. The employer will, under mutual agreement, allow the learner to spend undisturbed time at work to complete VLE activities for up to 2-3 hours per week.
- The employer should provide a safe and secure working environment for the apprentice.
- The employer should assist during the learning process and ensure learning targets are achieved and the apprentice is supported in their learning.
- Provide a mentor for the apprentice.
- Comply with equality and diversity legislation and good practice.
- Ensure the apprentice is safeguarded from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of a safe and effective care that enables children to have optimum life chances and to enter adulthood successfully.
What are the benefits of the Enhanced Delivery Model compared to a traditional apprenticeship programme delivery?
- All apprentices will receive a copy of the light vehicle maintenance and repair textbook developed and published by Remit.
- The programme requires less structured off the job training therefore the employer benefits from the apprentice being available and contributing more often at work
- The training is learner lead and helps to create autonomous apprentices who are proactive in their approach.
- Apprentices receive regular assessor contact.
- The programme provides the freedom for apprentices to learn at their own pace whilst the assessor can track progress to ensure learners can be supported as required.
- Greater control over the apprentices learning as the programme tracks all progress.
- Block training weeks allow apprentices to come together and work with other learners undertaking the same training from similar working environments. This proves very popular with apprentices and they share their passion for cars and their acquired knowledge.
